Postgraduate Program

The postgraduate master program at Sekwa Eye Hospital is part of the FK Asia Health Research Network. By working closely with the Epidemiology Unit of Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, Sekwa has established this master program for the training of its physicians in epidemiology and to join its community and public eye health studies.

Opportunities for this postgraduate program are currently limited to the medical staff at Sekwa Eye Hospital and Tsinghua University Hospitals.

Continuing Education for Eye Physicians

It has been shown that the overall quality of eye care service in China, including the capital area, is highly inadequate. This is due in part to inadequate infrastructure and management systems but a major issue is the lack of adequately trained manpower due mainly to the lack of sufficient post-graduate training systems that ensures an adequate standard of clinical diagnostic competency and level of surgical skills. By working closely the local medial associations, Sekwa Eye Hospital provides free accredited continuing education courses for the eye physicians in the greater Beijing region. This strategy for Sekwa is based on the understanding that it may help more patients by helping professional colleagues in other hospitals than it works alone.

The courses focus on clinical use and medical issues important to the evolving practice of ophthalmology, with a specific concentration on the basic and most advanced medical and surgical treatment options within glaucoma, retina and anterior segment surgery. Expert faculty presents the latest developments in the management of ocular conditions through a combination of didactic and highly interactive discussion sessions. Ample time will be reserved to pursue case studies.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Physicians and surgeons for eye care.

Continuing Education for Primary Physician and Nurses

This course is designed to update the primary care physician and nurses in the community health centers on common ocular problems. Emphasis will be on diagnosis and treatment of common eye disorders, e.g., cataract, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Techniques for screening eye diseases of cataract, angle-closure glaucoma, amblyopia and strabismus will be discussed.

At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able:

  • To be knowledgeable of cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, amblyopia and strabismus.
  • To evaluate cataract, shallow anterior chamber, and common pediatric ocular problems.
  • To apply the material presented to daily patient care and to properly refer the patient.

Neurological Vision Rehabilitation Fellow Program

BRIVS developed a Neurological Vision Rehabilitation Fellowship Program  in 2019 and was granted candidate status by the American Occupational Therapy Association. The program’s focus is to promote clinical excellence in neurological vision rehabilitation in an outpatient occupational therapy setting.

Our fellowship program provides an intensive, twelve month experience combining clinical and didactic learning opportunities. The program will offer fellows at least 340 hours of one on one clinical and didactic learning opportunity.  This occurs concurrently with clinical practice as a treating therapist in the outpatient and inpatient settings.  The fellow will attend specialty conferences, monthly physician-led rounds, special interest groups, in services and outside seminars.

Curriculum
The program combines clinical mentoring, the opportunity for advanced clinical practice, didactic information, and specialty learning.

  • Fellowship program goals will be achieved through a combination of formal and informal educational methods and roles:
    • Direct care provision as well as mentored clinical practice in outpatient vision program services of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation.  Clinical mentors have specialty  training and backgrounds in areas including vision rehabilitation, vestibular rehabilitation, acquired and traumatic brain injury, Neuro IFRAH functional movement systems, cervicalgia, sports rehab, neuro optometry
    • Didactic learning and structured mentoring sessions
    • Participation in clinical research projects
    • Participation and leadership in Neurologic special interest groups.
    • Community outreach, endeavors project.
