Sekwa Eye Hospital is one of the pioneer private hospitals in Modern China. It was founded by a group of eye physicians and surgeons in Beijing in 2004.

The Sekwa Eye Hospital was established in March of 2004 at the old premises of the Descheng Community Hospital (now the Descheng Community Health Service Center).  One year later, in September 2005, the hospital was relocated to a temporary facilities just east of the Beijing Normal University.

From its establishment at the Descheng Hospital, the founders of Sekwa engaged the leadership of Descheng Community Health Service System by supporting their community outreach work and established a cooperation for the Systematic Screening of Diabetes Patients that included a cross sectional study of diabetes and its complications as related to eye disease (Desheng Diabetes & Diabetic Retinopathy Study:  Early Diagnosis and Long Term Complications).  The main aim of the program was to give a basis for the development of a framework for service provision in the early detection of Diabetes Complications as part of the Chinese Community Healthcare Reform. The project gained international recognition through a Norwegian Research Council (International Research Development Grant) as well as national science grants  (National Basic Research (973) Program Fund, Ministry of Science and Technology, PR China).

With the support of the Norwegian FK Foundation (Fredskorpset) and later the Research Council of Norway, Sekwa has built partnerships with institutions from several countries, including Thailand, Mongolia, Nepal, Bangladesh and Norway. With these partnerships, Sekwa has built an international environment for its medical service, training and research, and has become one of the very few hospitals in China with the privilege of independent international cooperation, issued by the Administration of Foreign Experts of the State of the People’s Republic of China.

The hospital has been appointed as a specialized eye care center in Beijing and a regional eye center under a national program of Ministry of Science and Technology of China since 2007.

In 2016, the Sekwa Hospital is relocated to the current location, a 6000 sq meter complex in Western District within the Second-Ring Road of Beijing City. The hospital is now a specialized comprehensive eye hospital with multidisciplinary Clinic, including a comprehensive diabetes care unit. The hospital includes complete diagnostic and lab facilities equipped with standard diagnostic suites.  The hospital has 4 surgical suites equipped for microsurgery of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye.
